SPADE Appeal

An appeal for contribution to the flood victims of Assam

Dear Friends,

As you are aware flood has created havoc in the state of Assam, taking lives, destroying homes and hearths and rendering thousands of people shelter less. Food and health security are the moot questions now. These people are not only suffering from want of food, drinking water, clothing and shelter, but each day more and more people are getting affected by diseases like, general fever, cough and cold, malaria, dysentery, jaundice, gastrointestinal diseases, skin diseases etc., which are common during and after flood. As usual state's intervention in alleviating the condition of the distressed people is not adequate.

We the members of SPADE, a voluntary organization have been engaged in flood relief and rehabilitation activities in the districts of Nalbari and Dhemaji for last five years. We have already distributed a consignment of food materials among around 1000 people in the Bagta village under Hazo circle on July 17, 2004. Looking at the health needs of the flood affected people around that place, we now intend to go further interior and hold health camps on July 24 and 25 (Saturday and Sunday) and cover around 1500-2000 population.

We have planned our next health camp in the Dhemaji district, in Narowathan, Batgharia and Samarajan panchayats, where we are engaged in sustainable flood related activities.

In this endeavour we are collecting cash or kind from our friends and like-minded people and organizations so that we can continue support activities in the affected areas. SPADE has both short-term reliefs as well as long-term sustainable programmes in the pipeline. As part of our sustainable efforts we have already raised 25 tubewells in Dhemaji, which are giving immense service among the flood hit people for drinking water (We will be sending you the photographs soon). We have realized that apart from taking scientific measures to withstand flood, economic empowerment of the people will give them at least some potency to cope with the flood situation. Therefore, we also intend to take up some projects in that line too. Till now we have done only limited activities related to economy generation. Your joining hands with us would not only benefit the afflicted people but your personal involvement (although physically distanced) will strengthen our morale as well. I am sure it would also boost your sense of belongingness to the state/region.

Hope you will appreciate our initiatives and contribute generously and help us help the distressed at this critical juncture of our state. For your contribution you may kindly contact Mr. Autri Dutta at dutta@cs.umn.edu. Your solidarity will be our strength.Thanking you and looking forward to your positive response.

Yours sincerely,

(Anuradha Dutta)
